We’re back with another episode of Fluttershy in the Middle as this is an episode that drops a pretty sizable bombshell on us which is that Fluttershy actually has a family!  PONY SHOCK!!  For such a big revelation to put in an episode, does this manage to do all it can with this latest development, or is it too little too late to be of any significance?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash (the latter decided to tag along to get a break from the Wonderbolts) having a nice lunch at her parents’ house which is still something I’ll have to get used to.  Seriously, of the three major pegasi in the series (Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Scootaloo), none of them have had families that have shown up in the six seasons this show has been running.  Hell, now that THAT cat is out of the bag, I guess we might as well move onto the tragic death of Applejack’s parents!  Her mother doesn’t seem to have much going on design wise, but Dear old dad is basically if you took Mr. Rogers and Ned Flanders and put them in the teleporter from The Fly.  Not OG Ned Flanders who was kind of a pompous ass or modern day Ned Flanders who has stopped taking Homer’s crap; the middle Ned who was a total pushover.

“Well howdily doodily Flutter-rino!  I would let you borrow our lawnmower, but the neighbors been borrowing it for about seven years now.”     “SHUT THE HELL UP OVER THERE!  I’M TRYING TO DRINK!”     “You’ve got it best buddy!”

Welcome back to another episode of Rasho-Pony!  So far, season 6 has been a somewhat more successful version of the underwhelming fifth season.  While last season promised change and exploration but failed to deliver on it, this season feels a bit more assured of itself and has tried some new ideas here and there to keep things fresh.  Does that work for this episode where it’s essentially one big flashback to piece together the story up to now, or will this be a gimmick that wears out its welcome all too quickly?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with five of the Mane6 frantically racing towards Rarity’s house in the hopes of stopping her from reading a review of the opening night at her Manehattan Boutique.  The reason why is not clear yet, but it has something to do with information that they apparently divulged to the fashion critic which is presumably NEGATIVE information based on how they’re rushing to stop her from reading it.  Unfortunately they are too late as Rarity has the newspaper in hand and is merely waiting for her friends to arrive so she can read it with them.  For the sake of conflict, she refuses to listen to anything they say and proceeds to read it out loud; the others deciding to start hiding behind heavy objects while she does so.

We’re back with another episode of The Taming of the Starlight!  After last week’s respite from the newest member of Twilight’s inner circle to focus on Rainbow Dash, it’s time to check back in with our not-quite-yet reformed former dictator.  Not only that, but it’s SOMEHOW Hearth’s Warming Eve time already which is odd considering it looked very much like Spring in the last episode, so maybe the show is trying to make up for lost time or something.  Anyway!  Will Starlight learn about the magic of Hearth’s Warming Eve, or will they let her be a Grumpy Gus until the ornaments are put away?  Well you can probably guess which one it is, but let’s find out!!

The episode begins with everypony singing a Hearth’s Warming Eve carol throughout the town and leading into Twilight’s Doom fortress where the main festivities are happening; presumably leaving the chosen people of Pony-rael to their own devices as they celebrate Horse-anukah in the privacy of their own homes.

We’re back with another episode of The Wonderbolt Years!  Rainbow Dash’s ongoing quest to become a member of the prestigious group might be reaching its ultimate conclusion with this episode that puts her among their ranks once and for all!  Will this manage to be just as good as the LAST time a major series long plot line had gotten a resolution which was Crusaders of the Lost Marks or is this a hasty conclusion that doesn’t adequately capture the magnitude of this event?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with Scootaloo and Rainbow Dash expositing to each other about an upcoming Wonderbolts event in Ponyville that Rainbow Dash will be a part of.  Rainbow Dash corrects her about one thing which is, as you know, she’s actually a RESERVE member which means she’ll be there but not in the main event.  Well that’s too bad.  If only there was a way for her to get a chance to fly with them, or if the Wonderbolts finally gave her a shot in their ranks.  If only something like that were to happen…

“That’s right Rainbow Dash!  We’ve got your wife!”     “But I’m not married!”     “You are now!  TO THE WONDERBOLTS!!”

We’re back with another episode of Everybody Hates Starlight!  She has been a bit of a contentious character, hasn’t she?  Some people weren’t happy with her becoming a main character at the end of season five, while others have found her to be the injection of new blood that this series needed.  I’m still optimistic, but I’m worried that they won’t take full advantage of what her character can represent and will just try to go the safe route.  We’ll have to see as this is the most Starlight centric episode yet!  Will they finally make good on the promises of this character, or will she be just as poorly utilized as the Cutie Map from season five?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with Twilight and Starlight setting the table for an upcoming dinner with Princess Celestia.  Why they’re setting the table a whole day before she shows up, I have no clue, though I’m willing to assume that was Twilight’s idea.  Maybe she wants to make sure it’s done perfectly?  Nope, because she gets crabby when Starlight sets it immediately (and impeccably) using her magic and I guess Twilight wanted to use the time to lecture her about friendship… or something.

MLPS6E06-1
“What could we POSSIBLY learn by setting the table slowly?”     “Uh… friendship is about patience?  Alright fine!  YOU GOT ME!  I just wanted to show off my custom made dinnerware!  HAPPY!?”     “it actually is pretty nice.”     “Thank you!”

It feels like it was just yesterday that this show was still on the air and not living up to it’s potential, doesn’t it?  Season five was overall a disappointment, mainly due to the MacGuffin they introduced being underutilized (the Cutie Map) and the finale not really having the kind of punch and significance that we are used to getting from this show.  There were more than a few important and satisfying episodes throughout the season (The Cutie Map, Slice of Life, Rarity Investigates, Crusaders of the Lost Mark) but taken as a whole it just didn’t do much to advance our main characters or the world that they inhabit.  Fortunately, the best thing Hasbro could have done was to minimize the hiatus between season which means we can move forward right away so that fans (like me) aren’t moping for too long about the mediocrity of the last season.  Can they manage to recapture the magic of this series with a smart and exciting season premiere, or will the mediocrity continue as we slowly realize that the show has reached its peak?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with Starlight Glimmer walking through the halls of Twilight’s Doom Fortress; looking for the library and hanging lampshades along the way.

Super Recaps: My Little Pony season 5 (The Cutie Re-Mark) Season Five Finale!!

We’re finally here!  It’s the end of the fifth season of My Little Pony and it has certainly been a rocky one.  With some really strong episodes right out of the gate, it looked like this season was going to be the best of the series, but over time it started to wander back into its usually high, but not extraordinary, standards.  Still, the season finales have always been a high mark for the series with A Canterlot Wedding being one of my favorite episodes of the series.  Will they manage to pull out all the stops so that we can close this season on a high note, or will it just be another example of this season taking things too safe?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with Twilight trying to memorize a speech she’s going to give at Celestia’s School of Magic and progress seems to be slow… despite the speech being barely a paragraph long.  Well Twilight being the perfectionist that she is continues to rehearse the speech over and over again to a captive audience of one.

Super Recaps: My Little Pony season 5 (The Hooffields and McColts)

Welcome back to another episode of The Ponyville Hill-Ponies!  This time around we take a trip to whatever the heck is the Equestrian equivalent of the Deep South for yet another mission doled out by the all-knowing and all-seeing map of friendship!  The map, like the rest of the season, has had its ups and downs in terms of quality episodes, but it’s easily the most interesting concept they came up with this season and definitely gives the writers some creative freedom to explore the world.  Will they manage to live up to the potential that the map provides them with, or will this be another safe and predictable episode in a season that had just a bit too much of that already?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with Fluttershy hosting a book club for all her animal friends where they are reading Wuthering Hooves.  Wow.  There’s uh… there’s a lot to cover already.  First of all, I’m pretty sure they’re taking MY shtick right now considering how many bad literary horse and animal puns I’ve already done in these recaps.

“After this we’ll read Catcher in the Rhinoceros by J.D. Salamander, and then follow that up with the Mill-neigh-nium Trilogy by Stag Larsson!”

Super Recaps: My Little Pony season 5 (What About Discord?)

We’re back with another episode of The Twilight Sparkle Show!  After the two back to back holiday episodes, it’s time to get the series back into the swing of things, and what better way to do that than with another Discord episode?  John de Lancie’s preeminent performance as the god of all chaos is definitely a highlight of the series, but his presence can occasionally be a bit underwhelming, especially when he’s being overly needy instead of a rascally force of destruction.  Will this end up being another classic Discord episode, or will we finally tire with his never ending antics and codependency?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with Twilight playing the library equivalent of fifty-two pick up, in that she took ALL the books off the shelves and is going to put them back on (with Spike’s help obviously).  Look, I’ve had jobs where the best thing to do when bored was alphabetize the DVD bins, but she’s using up a three day weekend (what holiday is it, Celestia Day?) to re-alphabetize the library which I’m PRETTY sure is already alphabetized!  Is it just me, or is Twilight becoming less and less relatable as the series goes on?  She started off as an introverted bookworm who had her moments of wackiness, but was definitely an audience avatar when compared to the vibrant and specific personalities of the other characters.  They’ve since added to her character and given her defining traits, but I think they’ve gone a bit too far and are approaching Big Bang Theory levels of cartoonish nerdiness.

“After alphabetizing these books, we can follow that up with a rousing series of calculus problems followed by three dimensional chess!”     “Can I just go outside?”     “NO!!  WE’RE BONDING!!!”

Super Recaps: My Little Pony season 5 (Scare Master)

Get your nerves pre-rattled because this weeks’ episode is gonna be ultra-spooky!  After three season, we finally get another episode based on the best holiday in the show due to it being an analogue for what really is the best holiday (Halloween) but also because it’s a celebration all about Luna!!  Sadly, it looks like this won’t be another one of her episodes but that doesn’t mean they won’t find SOME way to have lots of fun with the fantastic setting they’ve got here, right?  Will this be another classic that lives up to the original Nightmare Night episode which was also the first Luna centric one, or will this continue to be less than stellar like the last two episodes in the wake of Crusaders of the Lost Mark?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with Fluttershy battening down the hatches for whatever is terrifying her this time.  Zombie apocalypse?  Alien invasion?  Were-rabbits?  Nope, it’s simply because it’s Nightmare Night and that alone is enough to send her into full on survivalist mode.  Then again, I’d be a bit hesitant to go outside if I saw ponies wearing those… questionable outfits.

“What are you?”     “Sexy changeling.  And you?”     “Sexy dragon.”     “Wait, isn’t that offensive?”     “I don’t know.  Should we ask Spike?”
