Super Recaps: My Little Pony season 7 (A Royal Problem)

We’re back with another episode of Friendship is Practical Magic!  For the most part, this season has been rather underwhelming when focusing on our core cast of characters that have had dozens of episodes dedicated to them already while episodes on not so ubiquitous ponies have been real highlights; not just of this season but of the series as well.  Clearly there needs to be a shake up if this series wants to keep being such a prominent fixture in western animation; maybe not as much as Adventure Time ended up doing, but the LEAST we can do is expand the world a bit more and maybe not touch base with Ponyville as often!  Hopefully they’re listening to my FANTASTIC advice because we have yet another episode that we’re focusing on characters that haven’t quite gotten their due in the series proper!  Will this be yet another successful gamble for the season that’s on a hot streak for these kinds of episodes?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with… oh…  oh wow!!  They’re getting back to the Cutie Map!!  YES!!  I’ve never been so happy to see this pointless MacGuffin!  After an interminable stretch of mediocre episodes stuck right in the middle of boring ol’ Ponville, this is the perfect excuse to get us out of this rut the season has found itself in and the series should REALLY utilize this plot device more!  Oh, and what’s this!?  The map is sending out Best Pony Starlight Glimmer to solve the problem of Other Best Ponies Princess Celestia and Princess Luna!  The only way this could get any better is if they send Trixie too!!  Wait, ARE THEY!?

We’re back with another episode of I Love Trixie, starring MLP’s very own Lucy/Ethel besties Starlight Glimmer and THE GREAT AND POWERFUL TRIXIE!!  It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of any episode that puts these two together, and the fact that they are the subject of the season premiere’s second episode is certainly a good way to get me to overlook the fact that we’re starting the season off without a big two-parter to shake things up and start things off with a bang.  Does this turn out to be yet another wonderful use of the two best characters the series has going for it right now, or has this particular team up managed to run its course already?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with Trixie and Starlight in the kitchen of Twilight’s Doom Fortress where the former is getting some remedial lessons on magic.  I don’t know why she needs magic when she’s already a master of MAGIC!, but I guess THE GREAT AND POWERFUL TRIXIE will not be outdone in ANY field of study.  At the very least, she’s still the master of adorable frustration which she proves to us once again after the fifth attempt to turn a pepper shaker into a teacup fails.

“You put an anti-magic spell on this, didn’t you.  Yes Trixie.  I took the time to come up with a spell to nullify all magic and placed on a random object you JUST SO HAPPENED to try and turn into a teacup.  I absolutely did that.”     “AH HA!!  THE GREAT AND POWERFUL TRIXIE IS TRULY THE MASTER OF DEDUCTION AS WELL!!”

We’re back with another episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and it feels like an ETERTINTY since I last said that!  Then again, the show has taken MUCH longer to start a new season in the past, particularly between seasons four and five when they were being switched over from The Hub to Discovery Family, but that doesn’t mean it was any easier to go without my weekly fix of Pony Magic!  Now the new season is actually doing something very different right off the bat as the show USUALLY starts off with a two-parter to open the season with yet decided to forgo that for the first time since the series began to instead have to separate episodes to start us off with.  Does a less bombastic opening salvo for the season still manage to bring the excitement needed to bring the fans back on board, or does this first episode drop the ball right off the bat?  Let’s find out!!

The episode picks up not too long after the events of the season 6 finale where everyone is getting ready for the award ceremony to honor Starlight Glimmer, Trixie, Thorax, and Discord, for their brave efforts to thwart Queen Chrysalis’s latest scheme.  They didn’t CAPTURE her so she’s still out there probably scheming something else, but her power has at least been diminished since all the Changelings turned on her and became beautiful florescent colored bug horses for their troubles and installed Thorax as their new king.  Probably less to do with his role in overthrowing the monarch than the fact that he now has BAD ASS ANTLERS!

Super Recaps: Equestria Girls: Legend of Everfree

Equestria Girls: Legend of Everfree and all the images you see in this recap are owned by Hasbro

Directed by Ishi Rudell

Well what do we have here?  It looks like another Spin-Offs Are Magic movie has been graciously provided by Hasbro who’s always looking to find new ways to milk it’s biggest cash cow that isn’t being helmed by Michael Bay!  Now what’s interesting about this Equestria Girls movie though is that we’ve finally established Human Twilight as an entity in this world and is now a part of our parallel universe crew which, coincidentally (or not so coincidentally) now has seven members  at about the same time as Pony Twilight got a new member for her team!  It also means that this franchise doesn’t have tie itself to the school to accommodate Pony Twilight who still needs to enter in and out of this dimension through the statue portal thingy which gives this a chance to stand on its own as an independent world rather than an extension of Equestria.  Does this series manage to throw off the shackles of its spin-off roots in spectacular fashion, or will removing the training wheels only lead to pain and an uncertain future for these characters?  Let’s find out!!

The movie begins with Human Twilight who is tossing and turning in her sleep from some sort of nightmare, and while we don’t get a glimpse of what she’s dreaming about, we DO at least get a glimpse of her room which has some interesting details all on its own.

I’m guessing Spike was the one who insisted a picture of him be framed and hung on the wall.

We’re back with another episode of Let’s See What Spike Does with Too Much Power, as seems to be the premise of most episodes that involve him.  That doesn’t change here as this episode is all about Spike and the Dragon Kingdom; the latter of which we haven’t really seen since Dragon Quest from season two.  Will this be another episode that shows how great of a character Spike can be while also showing us new and interesting details about the dragons in this world, or will this just be another episode that pokes fun at Spike’s incompetence while also not doing much with the other dragons?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with Spike doing what he does best; menial tasks for Rarity to maintain his firm placement in the Friend Zone.  Right now, he’s filling the role of a pack mule while Rarity harvests her own crystals out of a cave somewhere.  Props to her for going that far to get good jewels, though you’d think there’d be someone else who would get paid to do this.  Her business is successful enough to have three locations, yet she has the time to go mine her own resources?

“Those bastards aren’t gonna price gouge ME!”     “Yup.  And your gonna stick it to them by bringing a baby with you to do manual labor.  Good job there Rarity.  Fight the power!”

Super Recaps: Sailor Moon Episode 2 (Punishment Awaits: The House of Fortune Is the Monster Mansion)

Sailor Moon and all the images you see in this recap are owned by Toei Animation and licensed by Viz Media

Episode directed by Takao Yoshizawa

We’re back with another episode of Sailor Moon Classic!  With the first episode out of the way, we are now plunging headfirst into the filler episodes which Sailor Moon Crystal did not choose to use, so we won’t have anything really to compare it against and we’ll have to see how it holds up on its own.  Will this episode give us what was so desperately missing in Sailor Moon Crystal, or will it just go to show that Crystal was right all along to streamline series the way it did, even if it did so poorly?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with… a recap of the episode we’re about to see?  What!?  Yeah, it’s that thing they usually put at the end of the PREVIOUS episode to get you excited for the next one, but they put it at the beginning of the episode its advertising!  Not only that, but it has some serious spoilers in it!!  Oh, and after THAT is a recap of the previous episode where Usagi, after just explaining what she’s GOING to do as Sailor Moon, tells the audience that she is in fact… SAILOR MOON!!  I’m assuming this is going to be the case every episode, but I’m only going to complain about it here.  Is this how the original dub or the original Japanese version was done!?  It’s just so out of place to put these two things back to back like this at the very beginning of the episode and just starts things off poorly.  Anyway, the episode begins with a group of women lining up around the block to see a fortune teller.  Apparently this guy is famous and has been on TV, but he still operates from a card table in an alley.  Does he have a permit for that!?

“I hear this John Edward guy is the real deal!”

Super Recaps: My Little Pony season 5 (Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?)

WHAT!?  We’re not gonna have ponies to talk about for a couple of months!?  HERESY!!  First Sailor Moon Crystal is ending its first season and now this!?  What will become of me without magical girls and magical ponies to talk about!?!?  NO!  I CANNOT LET THIS GET ME DOWN!!  I HAVE A JOB TO DO HERE AND I’M GONNA GIVE IT MY ALL!!!  So how do they decide to end this half of the season?  Why with a Luna episode of course!  Everyone’s favorite princess gets the spot light this week as we find out more about what’s going on inside her head and the trouble it causes for everyone else!  Will we get another classic episode like Luna Eclipsed, Bloom & Gloom, For Whom the Sweetie Belle Tolls, and several others, or will we get another bad one like… huh.  Actually, I don’t think she’s HAD a bad episode.  There were episodes where she was underutilized for sure, but never one that was bad.  Well THAT’S certainly a good sign, but can they keep up the trend in this episode!?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with the Mane 6 barreling down the halls of the Castle of the Two Sisters, clearly looking for something with the utmost of haste.  Their goal seems to be Princess Luna who’s standing in the main hall of the castle and seems to be expecting their arrival.  While waiting, a small cloud of star energy or whatnot appears behind her, and Luna address it as Tantibus and lets it know she’s ready for whatever happens next.

“My body is ready.”

Super Recaps: My Little Pony season 5 (Princess Spike)

We’re back with another episode of Syndication is Magic!  After reaching the 100th episode milestone last week (seriously; if this show is huge on a no name channel, imagine how big it’ll be if Cartoon Network picked it up!?) we seem to be heading back into business as usual for the season.  While we have gotten some highlights like the season premiere and the 100th episode, things haven’t been as good as they should be for the series what with a bunch of filler episodes and unrealized potential.  Not only does that have this episode going against it, but it’s another Spike episode which tend to be a mixed bag for me.  Still, the last time he was the focus of the story was the very good Equestria Games, so maybe the writers have figured out how to write this character well and we’ll get another solid episode this time around.  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins in Canterlot where the four princesses are holding a summit for the entirety of Equestria.  I guess that means everyone’s going to put on a good show of peace, get a bunch of photo-ops, eat lots of fancy food, and accomplish absolutely nothing.

“And we shall call it… PonyCon!!”

Super Recaps: My Little Pony season 5 (Slice of Life) The 100th Episode!!

We’re back from the show’s three week hiatus with the ONE HUNDREDTH episode of the series!  Did anyone think it would get this far?  Well yes actually.  I mean we’ve got two spin-off films and a theatrical movie coming out soon.  This gravy train is gonna keep going until the wheels fall off, and even then they’ll find a way to milk it even further.  Still, it seems like the creators are taking this episode VERY seriously and want to make something that is truly memorable for the fans who have kept this series going for so long.  Is it a well done celebration of the show’s past and a hopeful look at the future, or is it a bad sign of things to come as the show slowly begins to lose relevance and creativity?  Let’s find out!!

The episode begins with Matilda (Hey!  We haven’t seen her for a while!) looking over her scrapbook which has gotten quite a few entries since the last time we saw it.
